Overview |
| International Culture Exchange Center (ICEC), School of Continuing Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is an organization engaged in international cultural exchanges. Its aim is to strengthen mutual understanding and cooperation between the Chinese people and the people of foreign countries and areas all over the world through people-to-people international cultural exchanges so as to serve for promoting the world peace, developing China's economy, and making education progressive and culture prosperous, especially that of Shanghai. In recent years, ICEC has kept on seeking for effective exchange way, and working hard for expanding its professional field by various kinds of exchange activities to introduce the Chinese nation's long historical culture with civilization and tremendous achievements in China's socialist construction while carrying out the policy of reform and opening to the outside world, from which the world people have had deep impressions of China. Meanwhile, we Chinese people ourselves are able to broaden our outlook and take an active attitude toward the excellent culture and advanced science & technology fetched out of China but the rest world. In recent years, we received many delegations or individual experts or scholars, probing into the cooperation and exchange mainly in the field of education especially academics, which greatly contributed to the reputation and popularity of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and built up the foreigners' understanding of China's culture, people, history and education, etc. In summer 2006, a 7-day study tour for a 28-person students-teachers delegation from University of Wisconsin Stevens Point was successfully organized by ICEC in Shanghai, which involved a series of exchange activities such as giving lectures, visiting historical well-known towns, experiencing China's traditional handicraft workshops, etc. In the coming years, the exchanges are to be enlarged in scope, widened in domain, which will contain more and more activities in culture, art, science, technology, politics, economics, nation, religion, educational management, press and academic research, etc. And the forms of exchange activities can be quite different, such as holding performance, exhibition, international conference and academic symposium; making an on-the-spot investigation and visit, giving some special lecture, organizing study tour, etc. Some upper-level activities are supposed to have great effect not only on the whole society but also on upper circles or professional experts. In doing so, we can not only promote cultural exchanges among the world people, introduce advanced science and technology into China, but also develop the Chinese people's friendship with the people of all over the world. To actualize our objective, we are to set up a professional team with versatile and sophisticated staff members trained well to be competent to organize or run international exchanges in various fields or cross-disciplines, and to establish a nationwide nongovernmental network to suit international cultural exchanges. From now on, ICEC will continue to follow after China's policy of reform and opening to the outside world to build our own modern well-off society in all-round way all over China especially Shanghai, and further do its best to make new progress by cultivating much more vast cultural lands so as to have still much greater contributions to the world peace, cultural exchanges, and human progress . |
